Two young men invent false identities to escape their obligations and pursue romance. When their deceptions collide, a series of misunderstandings and surprising revelations leads to delightful chaos.

Jack Worthing, a carefree young gentleman, is the inventor of a fictitious brother, Ernest. Jack uses this fictitious brother as an excuse to leave his country home, where he lives with his ward Cecily. So, from time to time, Jack travels to London, where he stays with his friend Algernon. During his London visits under the name Ernest, Jack falls in love with Algernon’s cousin Gwendolen. Gwendolen returns this love, for she decided to only marry a man named Ernest. Meanwhile, Algernon also invents a fictitious friend to avoid family obligations in London. Returning home to the country from London, Jack finds that Algernon has arrived there under the identity of the nonexistent brother Ernest. Algernon falls madly in love with Cecily, who has long been enamoured of Jack’s mysterious brother Ernest. With the arrival of Gwendolen and her mother, Lady Bracknell, chaos erupts.
